Dun Laoghaire Public Library
Dun Laoghaire, Ireland
The four elevations vary in response to the Library's site adjacent to a park and large bay. The masonry wall frames views to the park; the glass end wall towards the harbor recalls a lighthouse; and the street elevation filters southern light through a variegated wood screen.
A large opening in the center of the building filled with a monumental flight of stairs serves as a gateway between the streeet and the park. This opening provides separate but adjacent entrances to the library and a cultural center. The plan carefully allows the two functions to share spaces, visitors, and staff without compromising security.
